We Will Help Ensure Your Child Can See at
Their Very Best
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that kids have an eye exam every two years. These exams are essential for school age kids in order to ensure that they are seeing at their best.
Children should have their first exam when they are six months old. They should have additional exams at age three and just before they enter kindergarten (ages 5-6). Unless otherwise recommended by an Optometrist, kids should have eye exams every two years once they are in school.
Having strong vision is important, especially for kids. If your child struggles with reading, we can help them overcome visual barriers and learn to love reading. We bend over backwards for kids!
As you can imagine, undiagnosed vision problems can create a real obstacle for a child to overcome.
In addition to the “usual” refractive errors (astigmatism, hyperopia, and myopia), we are also looking for:
- Amblyopia – Known more commonly as “lazy eye”, detecting and treating amblyopia at a young age is important. Left untreated, the weaker eye (lazy eye) may continue to degrade in visual ability.
- Strabismus – Often called “crossed eye” or “eye turn”. Strabismus causes the eyes to be misaligned. It has a range of severity, with its most severe forms requiring surgery.
- Reading difficulties – Outside of learning challenges, we look for reading difficulties as a result of physical problems of the eyes. These include problems properly focusing, aligning, or operating as a “team”.
The TRS-5100 generates extremely accurate and reliable results, offering patients a glasses prescription using 100% digital instrumentation.
Reading is a fundamental skill that a person will use every day throughout their life. Learning to read is a challenging experience for all, even without vision problems making that challenge more difficult.
When kids struggle to read, all areas of their life – academic and otherwise – are impacted. At Lakeside Vision, our goal is to help your child learn to read in a way that engages and excites them.
We work closely with kids to determine what is causing them difficulty when reading. Over the years we’ve learned what to look for and how to connect with a struggling child. This experience, combined with our unrelenting focus, are what makes us uniquely effective in helping kids of all ages learn to read.
What to Expect During the Eye Exam
The eye exam is non-invasive and completely painless. Throughout the exam we engage the child and educate them on what we are doing and why. We view this as our opportunity to get kids invested in their eye health!
The exam itself is completed in under an hour. If we find signs of a developing eye condition, we will discuss our findings with you and outline our recommended next steps.
We will also verify your child’s eyeglass/contact lens prescription (if applicable).
Treating Eye Conditions With Corrective Lenses, Vision Therapy, or Surgical Options
In many cases these common refractive errors can be corrected and managed via corrective lenses (eyeglasses or contact lenses). In the case of strabismus caused by untreated hyperopia, corrective lenses and vision therapy may realign the eye. In severe cases, surgery may be required to correct strabismus.
Vision therapy – involving patching the stronger eye to train the weaker one – is an effective tool that we may recommend if we feel your child will respond favorably.
“My first time at the optometrist, and I couldn't recommend Lakeside Vision any higher. Everyone from the moment I walked in until the time I left made me feel at ease. I waited basically no time despite a very busy office. Everyone explained everything to me very well. I will mostly definitely return and recommend this location to my friends and family.”
“Loved everyone from start to finish. The doctor and staff are very knowledgeable, pleasant, and efficient. The location is easy to get to, and the office is very warm and inviting. Would highly recommend Lakeside Vision to anyone.”
“One of the best offices I have ever been to in Pennsylvania. Great staff that is supported by great doctors. If you are looking for an eye doctor then I highly recommend lakeside vision!”
“My husband had his first appointment yesterday, and was very pleased with the services provided. The staff were knowledgeable and very friendly! Our son had been the first to visit the office last year. Thanks for another great experience! It's obvious that this office takes the time to educate their staff about quality care!”
“I was taken care of wonderfully. I was made to understand everything that was done and what the reason was needed. My vision problems were summed up for me and the glasses were ordered for me to correct the problems with my vision. I am very happy that we are back with Lakeside Vision.”
