We are happy to provide consults for LASIK in Hawley, PA.

Safe and effective for most prescriptions, LASIK is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. It is effective at correcting most refractive issues, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

In most cases the procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes per eye. It is generally painless, though some postoperative discomfort is expected for a few days.

Interested in LASIK in Hawley, PA? A consultation is required in order to make sure you’re a candidate. Visit us for a detailed evaluation of your eye and its candidacy for refractive surgery.

Unfortunately, LASIK isn’t ideal for everyone. In order to achieve the best possible outcome, it’s important for us to perform the appropriate due diligence prior to providing you with a surgical referral.

During your consultation we will perform a comprehensive eye exam, looking at the shape and curvature of your cornea in particular. Some items we look for are:

  • Past medical and ocular history, specifically looking for prior injuries or trauma that may complicate the procedure
  • Corneal topography and corneal pachymetry, which measure the shape/curvature and thickness of the cornea (respectively)
  • Confirmation of your prescription (validating the refractive error and severity)
  • Measurement of pupil size and tear production
  • Assessment of overall eye health
While LASIK is the most well known surgery, it is not the only type available to correct refractive issues.
  • LASIK – Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis – A small flap is created (via a microkeratome) on the cornea, exposing the underlying tissue. A laser is then used to reshape the lens and correct the refractive issue.
  • PRK – Photoreactive keratectomy – This differs from LASIK in that no flap is created. The laser reshapes the outer layer of the cornea.
  • LASEK – Laser epithelial keratomileusis – This procedure is similar to PRK, though it differs in that an epithelial flap is created and an alcohol solution is applied to loosen the epithelial cells. The laser is then used to reshape the cornea.
There are other versions of laser surgery not discussed here. The above three are the most popular.
On the day of surgery, surgical preparation will actually take more time than the surgery itself. While you will be at the Ophthalmologist’s office for around two hours, only about 20 minutes of that will be spent undergoing surgery. During the procedure your eye and surrounding tissue will be numbed. This is to prevent discomfort. The eye will then be prepared in accordance with the surgery you are having. Once ready, you will be asked to maintain your focus on a single point (usually a light). This is to keep your eye steady while the laser works its magic. You will then be sent home with an eye shield and instructions on what to expect over the next few days, weeks, and months.
We will see you at our office for a post-surgery assessment within 48 hours (ideally, within 24 hours). You can expect mild discomfort for a few days to weeks after surgery. You may experience:
  • Burning/itching sensation
  • Watery eyes, excessive tearing
  • Mild pain
  • Blurry/hazy vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Red, bloodshot eyes
It is common for people to want to rub their eyes (don’t). Remember, these symptoms are temporary and will abate after a few days.
